About the Author
Professor Eric Shepherd is a chartered scientist, forensic psychologist, counselling psychologist, and psychotherapist. Originally a career intelligence officer he has held a wide range of clinical and academic appointment. He has worked with the police within and outside UK, with the legal profession, with government departments (including the UK Ministry of Defence, the Serious Fraud Office, and HM Revenue and Customs), and with the private sector (including banks, insurers, telecommunications providers and the petrochemical industry). He was a member of the UK Home Office Working Party on Investigative Interviewing. He is co-editor of Witness Testimony and Analysing Witness Testimony (OUP).
Dr Andy Griffiths is a police officer with over 25 years' experience as a detective, rising to the rank of Detective Superintendent leading homicide, organised crime and intelligence departments. He has also been involved in training police officers for the majority of his career, and served as a member of the Association of Chief Police Officers strategic interview steering group in England and Wales for over a decade. He was awarded his PhD for research into the effectiveness of specialized interview training in real life major crime cases and has advised police forces both in the UK and numerous countries worldwide.

Now in a new second edition from the Oxford University Press, this highly regarded book is considered the benchmark text on establishing best practice in investigative interviewing technique. If you are a lawyer, a member of the judiciary, involved in law enforcement, or perhaps an expert witness, or student, this book will be of direct relevance to you as and when inevitably, you will need to conduct interviews to elicit (usually with difficulty) certain specific information.
In the words of the publishers, this book can show you how to ‘ask the right question at the right time and in the right way.’ If this sounds easy, you’ll discover on reading this book that it isn’t. Eliciting information from someone who doesn’t want to give it is no simple task. The aim of this book therefore, is to function as a ‘how-to’ manual to help you acquire the optimum level of investigative interviewing expertise.
Particularly interesting, as well as useful and practical, is the amount of minute analysis of interview situations and interviewees. The result is a wealth of insight aimed at enabling you to assess response behaviour via your own observation of visible psychological and physiological cues.
In some instances, you are guided step by step -- quite often via diagrams and boxed and bullet pointed sections -- though the management -- or indeed micro-management -- of an interview. As you’ll be relieved to know, the processes and procedures of what the authors refer to as the ‘conversation management’ approach are expressed in largely non-technical language. Or when technicalities do need to be used, they are clearly explained.
The co-authors, Professor Eric Shepherd and Dr Andy Griffiths are renowned experts in this difficult and sensitive field which touches on a number of disciplines. Shepherd (to cite only a few of his credentials) is a chartered scientist, forensic psychologist and counselling psychologist with wide experience in both the private and public sectors. Griffiths, as a Detective Superintendent and police trainer with an academic background, has lead homicide, organized crime and intelligence departments within the police services.
Demonstrating an ethical, compassionate and certainly practical and thorough approach to the problems and people involved in the investigative interview process, the book is a fascinating read that speaks with authority about a difficult subject.

The BEST Interviewing Text Available

Shepherd and Griffiths new text is the treatise for investigative interviewing. The text is a comprehensive review of Investigative Interviewing and Conversation Management. It should be a mandatory read (and study) for any law enforcement investigator. The authors focus on the most important part of any investigation, collecting and evaluating information. They spend little time on obtaining confession as this is not the underlying purpose of their training. This text trains officers to effectively interview so they know who to interrogate. By increasing the odds of interrogating a 'guilty' subject can we reduce the risk of interrogating an 'innocent' subject, reduce the risk of false admissions/confessions and ultimately reduce the number of false convictions.
If you want to improve on your interviewing skills and you are willing to really work on it, buy and study this text.The authors give very easy to understand instructions, examples and suggestions.

A must read

As a former policeman, and a lawyer in criminal defense work this is an outstanding book. It covers many of the psychological issues that are much more in play these days compared to the old rough and tumble. While the Reid technique continues to have its advocates and adherents, there is much more to interviewing. This is especially helpful to the defense counsel who has to interview witnesses. I think developing good interview skills for the defense counsel is often a neglected topic. A defense counsel has a similar goal to law enforcement - finding out what happened.
