The Soulless Grave picks up where The Lure of Fools left off, hits the ground running, and never looks back.
By Alex
The Soulless Grave picks up right where The Lure of Fools left off, throwing the reader straight back into action as Jekaran is brought before the king, Maely and Ezra continue their separate hunts for Jekaran, and Kairah experiences otherworldly dreams indicating the death and destruction the Eater brings with him. Meanwhile, we're introduced to new players, some of whom will undoubtedly carry over into the final chapter of The Age of the Infinite, and others who will only appear here.

Depending on how you like your books written, the narrative of The Soulless Grave may be a boon or a hindrance. As someone who doesn't regularly re-read novels, I fall into the latter camp. The Soulless Grave literally picks up where The Lure of Fools leaves off, and never looks back. There are references to events that occur in The Lure of Fools, but they are rarely—if ever—recapped for the reader. This isn't a problem if you read one novel after the other (or have inhuman levels of retention), but when you've got a year or more separating your last trip to Shaelar, references to past events or characters can be a bit hard to recollect.

I never had a problem with the writing or style in The Lure of Fools, but in my edition, there are a number of punctual errors that should have been caught and cleared up in editing. This was severely tempered in the sequel, with only a few noticeable errors that should have been picked up in editing. This might sound like a nitpick, but things like that tend to take me out of the story, so the lack of those allowed me to focus on the story and stay invested in what I was reading.

The story is well-crafted, and seems more original than The Lure of Fools, even though this is a continuation of that novel's story. Other reviewers noted that The Lure of Fools "borrowed" elements from Star Wars or The Lord of the Rings—which is fine, mind you, we all are influenced by the things we love—but the feeling of elements being borrowed or influenced by other literature or media wasn't noticeable to me in The Soulless Grave. The story moved briskly, and I never felt myself longing for a chapter to be over, and rarely did I find myself longing to move to another narrative viewpoint. The only exception was with Maely—not because of how she was written, but I just didn't relate to her journey or find myself as invested as I did with Jekaran, Ezra, Kairah, and other characters. This was undoubtedly a personal preference, and other readers may be very invested in Maely's story.

What I ultimately found interesting was that the story, in my opinion, hit something of a "reset" by the time the book ended. There are still plot threads to be wrapped up, and my opinion may change by the time Jason King releases The Fork of Destiny's Road, but this book has a larger sense of finality to it than The Lure of Fools did. The Lure of Fools came to something of an abrupt end for me, but this had a satisfying conclusion. I felt like the wait between The Soulless Grave and The Fork of Destiny's Road will allow time to digest the story, and leave me ready to return for the final visit to Shaelar next year.

All in all, The Soulless Grave is a good story. The characters are well-rounded, each has their own arc, and there are plenty of twists and turns, and a shocking goodbye to a primary character. If anything, I would recommend picking up The Lure of Fools and The Soulless Grave and reading them back-to-back in order to more easily follow the narrative of The Age of the Infinite.

but the narration is descriptive enough that most readers shouldn't have too much difficulty following along even if they hadn't
By Druid
I was very impressed with Jason King's debut novel 'The Lure of Fools', and have eagerly been awaiting the next installment ever since. 'The Soulless Grave' delivered and then some. It picks up right after the cliffhanger ending of the original, but the narration is descriptive enough that most readers shouldn't have too much difficulty following along even if they hadn't read 'Lure' (but you SHOULD read Lure too - it's really good!). From there, 'The Soulless Grave' is a fast paced, action packed adventure that adds interesting new characters, as well as expanding on the backstory of existing characters for a new level of depth I found very gratifying. King's system of magic through the use of 'talises' is very clever, and his antagonist 'Jove' is one of the flat out creepiest villains I've ever read. The ending doesn't leave you hanging quite as much as the first installment, but there are still plenty of unresolved story lines that leave you thirsting for more. Book three in King's 'Age of the Infinite' trilogy can't come soon enough!!!

Well played, Mr. King!

Who Is Hungry For More?
By Melissa Anne Curtis
I loved the first book, the Lure of Fools, and this second installment in the series did not disappoint! Big surprises, plenty of action, and (gasp) not everyone lives to the end. The only thing I would change is not within the book itself, but in my approach as the reader. I wish I had re-read the Lure of Fools to re-familiarize myself with the intricate happenings. The Soulless Grave is "Go!" from the first page and I think any stopping to re-visit things from the first book would slow down the story. As voracious fantasy readers, I don't think anyone among us has ever read a great book and then thought "That was awesome...I think I'll wait a while before picking up the next one." So read the first book and waste no time diving into this one. It's quite fitting that this book leaves you asking "So...who's hungry?"

Absolutly Loved It!!
By NitroNorm
There are some books i hate. There are some books you like. There are some books you put up on the shelf with all of your other Favorites. Then there are some books you've got to read over again because you liked it so much. This is one of those books.

The term mind transfer also refers to a hypothetical transfer of a mind from one biological brain to another. It is a common theme in science fiction.

The begining of the book starts off with the technology--the ability to upload your mind into a computer--having just been secretly invented and is now being tested. There is almost no mention on how this is done, and is the only speed bumb worth mentioning, but does not detract from the story. The book goes on to discribe that the development of technology in the future has been stiffled to the point that it rarely happens at all, because patent laws twenty years old prevent anyone else from developing something better, and the effort to make new machine would require millions if not billions of dollars to buy the rights for the components needed to create the final product. It's something we see happening today. In the book, anyone caught creating this illegal technology is put in jail. thus, those that are in power do not have to suffer world-changing technologies.

It is through this method that the author manages to convey, without actually saying it, that although the average technological savy student in a university can design and build a better TV than the best of what's available in your local store, the law prevents them from doing so, and is the reason why they are able to build a machine that can transfer a human mind into a computer. The reson nobody mentions "how it is done" is otherwise explained away by keeping their activities secrete from the authorities.

While in the computer as a virtual human being, people experiance a thirty to one speed up, because electricity is so much faster than chemical brains. in a single day, a person experiences a month of personal time. Free to think and do as they like in this ultimate escape from a reality filled with oppresive laws and secrete police, a community is quickly forged from the people who help build and develop the computers that make it possible, eventually bringing in their relatives and friends. They then go on to advance and build their technology free of restrictions. as they advance their technology, they advance their minds as well, becoming smarter, developing as both as people and as a community as the story moves on.
Eventually the government finds out and tries to stop them, and much drama is experienced in a battle of wit verses brawn.

I highly recomend that you buy this book!

If you liked the books: Assemblers of Infinity, Warp Speed or Quantum Connection by Travis S. Taylor, Lived Free or Die by John Ringo, The Probability Broach by L. Neil Smith, Seven of Nine from Star Treck, Mind Transfer, The Modular Mans, The Silicom Man,--buy this book.
You'll be glad you did.

Good page turner with interesting ideas
By Eric Pogrelis
This first novel from Mr. Smith is set in a "near future" world, where patent violations have become criminal offenses, the UN actually has the power to take military action against the United States, and scientific progress is held firmly in check by the corporate powers-that-be who value stability over advancement. Set against this backdrop we get a story of a small group of researchers who choose to buck the law and authorities in order to create a new technology allowing for the "onloading" of human consciousness into a digital medium and a Community of like-minded people to join them in the Virtual.

At first, Autonomy reads like a novel of rather fascinating ideas. Fans of Richard K. Morgan and Phillip Stross will see some conflicts and themes they are familiar with treated in new ways, as well as some ideas that to this reviewer were genuinely novel. Around the midpoint the story shifts to more of a thriller, as the plot focuses around the efforts of agents of the world's authorities to find and stop the Community living in the Virtual, and the Community's attempts to escape.

While the writing in this novel isn't as polished as more well-known authors in the genre, it holds up pretty well for a first effort. The author clearly has a point of view on intellectual property, which is reflected in the setting and some polemics delivered through his characters. Fortunately, this direct messaging only comes through once or twice and isn't enough to distract from the overall story -- the reader doesn't have to deal with Terry Goodkind-style speechifying every other page. Characterization is hit and miss -- the antagonists of the book are reminiscent of stock characters of the genre, while the best characterizations and character arcs are reserved for the story's heroes. The plot does keep you hooked and the writing is solid enough to provide some truly entertaining passages and turns of phrase. The ending of the novel feels a bit abrupt, but there is room for a sequel and I found the story entertaining enough that I hope the author chooses to revisit his characters and the world he's created in the future.

Awesome! :D
By Logan Haser
This was a fascinating and awesome read! ^_^
It was quite a ride, and it had a cast of interesting characters! :D
Once I hit 66% in the book I just plowed through the rest these last two days, it was captivating! :D

I feel like it was a bit unrealistic in some ways, as far as the way things went down, and some insights or lack thereof on the characters' parts seemed a little contrived or much.
But it wasn't that big of a deal, it actually makes a lot of sense, and it was interesting to read about! :D

Definitely one of the better books I've read in a while, and very inspiring too.
Highly recommended! :D \(^ u ^)

The land was theirs, but so were its hardships

Strawberries -- big, ripe, and juicy. Ten-year-old Birdie Boyer can hardly wait to start picking them. But her family has just moved to the Florida backwoods, and they haven′t even begun their planting. ";Don′t count your biddies ′fore they′re hatched, gal young un!"; her father tells her.

Making the new farm prosper is not easy. There is heat to suffer through, and droughts, and cold snaps. And, perhaps most worrisome of all for the Boyers, there are rowdy neighbors, just itching to start a feud.

Strawberry Girl
By Meg F.
I read "Strawberry Girl" when I was in 2nd grade and found it to be both compelling and disturbing. All of the characters, from the main protagonist, Birdie Sawyer, to the minor characters, exhibited complex emotions and thoughts, which I related to. For instance, Shoestring Slater's ambiguous existence: he felt extreme loyalty to his family and his father, even as he was filled with shame and embarrassment about his father's behavior. Birdie tended to be, at turns, resentful towards and understanding of the Slater's. When her strawberry plants were initially trampled by the Slater's cows, she was enraged and very judgmental. A short time later, when she realized that Shoestring, his mother and sisters had to return all of their new purchases because Mr. Slater squandered away the money he'd earned from selling an animal, she was extremely saddened and felt tremendous sympathy for the family.

Why is Strawberry Girl so readable? It's a simple story of the belief in hard work, the idea that all actions have consequences, and that all of us possess a degree of good and evil traits. At the story's turning point, Sam Slater finds God (with the help of the gluttonous preacher) stops drinking alcohol and is saved, thereby positively changing the lives of his entire family. It's a story of hope- even in harsh realities; sometimes people are rewarded, despite exhibiting a lack of hard work or honesty. Amidst all of this turmoil, both families were still able to behave "neighborly" towards one another. Did the families exhibit forgiveness and acceptance, or hypocrisy? That's for the reader to decide. Nonetheless, Lois Lensky offered up a picture of pioneer life in our nation that was uniquely brutal in its honesty and also comfortingly familiar.

This book is one of the few early childhood books I never forgot. In recent times, the category of 'children's books' has gone from being beneficial to being insulting. With the "dumbing down" of language and plot and the popularity of abridged versions of classic stories, the average child is being cheated out of a strong literary foundation. A story that challenges our children will only motivate thoughtful reflection, spark imagination, improve vocabulary and best of all, inculcate a love of reading that will help in every major area of their lives.

questionable for 3rd and 4th graders
By A Customer
Strawberry Girl seems innocent enough on the surface -- a book about a little girl and her family moving to a new house, planting new crops, and their hardships. However, the book has a strong overtone of fighting and feuding. The neighbors argue through the entire book. This book reminds me of "The Hatfields & the McCoys" for kids. The neighbors are constantly trying to "seek revenge" and "get even" with each other. Maybe I am just conservative, but I thought the book crossed the line a little for young children when the neighbors started killing one another's animals to seek revenge. I know this book was written in the 1940's and won the prestigious Newbery Medal, but not all books are timeless... some of them show their age and I think Strawberry Girl definitely shows its age with a plot that some parents and teachers might find questionable. There is a good "moral lesson" during the last two chapters, but still you will have to explain to your children why the neighbors killed one another's animals and why it is not right to do so and to seek revenge.
Another questionable act in the book is the drunkenness of the neighbor. He throws all of the families money away on alcohol and gambling. He loses his temper with his wife and his children, and he shoots the heads off of chickens one by one with a shotgun when he is drunk. Again, this one might be hard to swallow (no pun intended) with 3rd graders. The two older boys of this drunken man beat up the schoolteacher so badly that school has to be cancelled for weeks.
Another aspect of Strawberry Girl that makes it questionable is the language Lenski uses throughout the book. She uses an extreme southern (almost hillbilly-type) accent with each character in the book. After awhile it becomes tedious and difficult to read. I think it would be all right for 5th graders and advanced 4th graders. However, as a teacher of 3rd grade, I would have to say that most 8 and 9 year olds would find the language too difficult. It is challenging enough for readers this age to get through chapter books and to encounter so many new vocabulary words, but to have to deal with "I takened lessons way back in Caroliny when I was a young un and I ain't forgot yet. Hit makes me plumb happy to put my fingers on an organ again", may be just a little much for a 3rd grader.
My advice is to use this book as a read-aloud. You can read it to your children or your students. This will allow you to pronounce all of the southern dialog and you can explain as you go that there are better ways to solve differences then killing the neighbor's animals and so forth.

Excellent Read Aloud!
By Kelly
This is a wonderful tale of life in rural Florida in the 1940s. It is the story of "Birdie" and her family after they move to a new home and start a farm.

The book gives a very interesting historical perspective. The plot is riveting and held my children's attention. I also found it entertaining, which is a plus.

Another reviewer mentioned the dialect used in the book - it does take some getting used to [even for myself, a born and bred southern gal :) ]. It is very distinctive of that time period and that particular locale, but once you get used to it, the book becomes much easier to read. The dialect is only used in the dialog, so the rest of the book is written in "plain english".

Parents should be aware however that there are scenes in this book that may be upsetting to younger or more sensitive older children. Birdie's neighbors "feud" with them from the moment they move in, and the father of the neighbor family is a mean drunk who does not take care of his family. He does some horrible things [and Birdie's father does some less than wise things as well]. In one scene, the family's mule is poisoned by the neighbor man. In another scene, he tries to burn their house down. There is also a scene where a boy tries to feed a live rabbit to a rattle snake [the rabbit is rescued in the end] - this could also upset the animal lovers in your home.

Why do I still recommend this book? Because it is an outstanding moral tale - all the bad things are clearly bad. The bad behaviors are clearly bad and they have very real [and realistic] consequences for everyone involved in this story. My kids [who have, thankfully, never been exposed to drunkenness] learned clearly WHY alcohol, when abused, is such a terrible thing. I think it is a lesson they will carry with them for life - this book led to my children having very clear and interesting discussions amongst themselves about drinking and drug abuse and why being a drunk is such a terrible thing. It gave them great clarity.

In the end, this is a moral tale and a tale of redemption - something the world needs more of in my opinion. Reading this book together was a great experience for my children [and me!].

Conversación y controversia: Tópicos de hoy y de siempre (6th Edition), by Nino R. Iorillo, Andres C. Diaz

Conversación y controversia encourages the exploration of “free expression” in Spanish on universal topics of importance and interest. Promoting a free exchange of ideas in the classroom, this text allows students to develop their oral conversation and confidence in a friendly atmosphere, rather than by having the “right answer” or reviewing grammatical concepts.

The universally appealing chapter topics show the great similarity among cultures. These help students examine and express their own opinions and beliefs, on basic yet important issues of life. A natural, direct approach, written completely in Spanish without translations, encourages students to “think” in Spanish and break away from mentally translating to or from English.

In this new edition, the majority of topics have been retained, with updates reflecting current social and political realities. Additionally, three new topics have been added: Faith and Science, Climate Change, and Governments and Politics.

Cheaply made with high quality prices
By uofaspanish
The quality of the content of the 6th edition is, for the most part, good. My primary concern is that Prentice Hall has started to make cheap textbooks without lowering the price for students. I've taught with this textbook in the past and the 5th edition is printed on a much higher quality paper.

This one can be hard to read at times since you can see the text on the other side of the page. The pages of this textbook look like what you would expect from a cheap workbook. For $76, I'll find a different textbook that will be worth the price or see if the bookstore can get its hands on enough copies of the 5th edition.

Class text
By JANET A WALSEK
I got delivered the exact book I needed for the course in excellent condition. I just think that the school could have chose a better text. It's definitely overpriced, but texts tend to be because the publishers know there are those like us who HAVE to have it for a course.

Timely delivery. No problems.

If you had 2 sets of stars, I would have given 5 for the service and maybe 1 or 2 for the product.

A good conversation starter for Spanish learners
By Sadie
Good for people who are learning Spanish that like to read on current issues. It was perfectly relevant, and I will be ordering another copy soon for my class. Most of the topics had strong points on both sides, with only one or two weak arguments. It also did a great job of highlighting grammar concepts with note sections, vocabulary, and practice. Overall a good book.

Damming the Flood: Haiti, Aristide, and the Politics of Containment, by Peter Hallward

Once the most lucrative European colony in the Caribbean, Haiti has long been one of the most divided and impoverished countries in the world. In the late 1980s a remarkable popular mobilization known as Lavalas, or “the flood,” sought to liberate the island from decades of US-backed dictatorial rule. After winning a landslide election victory, in 1991 the Lavalas government led by President Jean-Bertrand Aristide was overthrown by a bloody military coup. Damming the Flood analyzes how and why Aristide’s enemies in Haiti, the US and France made sure that his second government, elected with another overwhelming majority in 2000, was toppled by a further coup in 2004.

The elaborate international campaign to contain, discredit and then overthrow Lavalas at the start of the twenty-first century was perhaps the most successful act of imperial sabotage since the end of the Cold War. Its execution and its impact have much to teach anyone interested in the development of today’s political struggles in Latin America and the rest of the post-colonial world.

Review
“Damming the Flood is an excellent book, the best study of its kind. It offers the first accurate analysis of recent Haitian history, and of its history in the making. Finally, we have an honest rendering of how the Haitian poor sought to advance their struggle for dignity at the close of the twentieth century, and of the forces that have stymied their struggle. Hallward’s new book is required reading for anyone who seeks to know Haiti and to understand the forces arrayed against all those who believe in genuine democracy.”—Paul Farmer

“Very convincing, a marvelous book. This riveting and deeply-informed account should be carefully read by those who recognize that Haiti’s tragic history is a microcosm of imperial savagery and heroic resistance—resistance which, as Hallward argues, will continue to shape Haiti’s political future if its people are granted the opportunity to take their fate into their own hands.”—Noam Chomsky

“Damming the Flood demonstrates that, contrary to what so many self-proclaimed experts have led us to believe with the steady diet of half-truths and outright lies they have been feeding us, it is indeed possible to ‘get Haiti right.’ All it takes is a healthy dose of respect for a nation and a people so deserving of it, and an uncompromising devotion to the truth.”—Patrick Elie, former Secretary for National Defense, Haiti

About the Author
Peter Hallward teaches at the Centre for Research in Modern European Philosophy at Kingston University, London. He is the author of several books including Absolutely Postcolonial, Badiou: A Subject to Truth, Out of This World: Deleuze and the Philosophy of Creation, and Damming the Flood.

The Book to Read on Haiti
By Nathan D. Backlund
No foreign policy issue is more distorted in the corporate media than Haiti, with the exception of Isreal/Palestine. Peter Hallward has written a marvelous book with a politically engaged perspective. His account of the years leading up to the U.S. kidnapping of Aristide in 2004 is an invaluable corrective to the demonization of Aristide and Lavalas. The story of Haiti, as told by Hallward, gives the reader insight into the lengths the U.S. government will go to repress popular movements that seek to redistribute wealth. Most Americans cannot comprehend the level of repression the U.S. can bring to bear on a small country like Haiti. For further evidence see the diplomatic cables released by Wikileaks and published in The Nation magazine. This book receives the highest praise from Chomsky, Zizek, and Dr. Paul Farmer. You shouldn't need any further proof that is is a must read.

This book offers students a method for understanding and mastering the rhetorical patterns that comprise expository writing. Its exercises ask students to arrange jumbled sentences into logical order, forming model essays for standard rhetorical patterns such as comparison/contrast, classification, and thesis support. These techniques force students to see the basic logic of different writing patterns. The goal of Whimbey's workbook is to teach the student to write concise and original essays on any topic.

Review

With this book...for the first time in my teaching career, I have found it possible to give more than just lip service to the idea of teaching thinking skills to freshmen writing students, specifically to my basic writing students....two chapters alone are worth the price of the book since they offer foolproof approaches to guided writing of full-length essays: Chapter 8 [Writing a Paper Beginning with a Thesis Statement That Includes an Opinion and Supporting Evidence] and Chapter 9 [Writing a Paper for a Competency Test].
—Writing Lab Newsletter

I think that those of you who teach basic (pre-college) writing will find it a God-send...Instead of reading model essays and answering literal questions to prove that they have read the assignments, students take apart the works of successful writers to see what makes them tick. Grammar, syntax, and rhetorical modes are covered in Analyze, Organize, Write in ways which require student application. The workbook also incorporates peer review...We will be including it in our remedial writing course.

From the Preface

These lessons were written for those who know little or nothing about modern science. Together they provide a rapid overview of the most fascinating aspects of the great revolution that has occurred in physics in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and of the questions and mysteries that this revolution has opened up. Because science shows us how to better understand the world, but it also reveals to us just how vast is the extent of what is still not known.

The first lesson is dedicated to Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity, the "most beautiful of theories." The second to quantum mechanics, where the most baffling aspects of modern physics lurk. The third is dedicated to the cosmos: the architecture of the universe that we inhabit; the fourth to its elementary particles. The fifth deals with quantum gravity: the attempts that are under way to construct a synthesis of the major discoveries of the twentieth century. The sixth is on probability and the heat of black holes. The final section of thebook returns to ourselves and asks how it is possible to think about our existence in the light of the strange world described by physics.

A simplified introduction to physics and reality for a non-cognoscente
By Rama Rao
Theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli has condensed physics ideas into this 78 pages book. This work is the result of a series of articles published in an Italian newspaper. Building basic concepts to comprehend the nature of reality has not been simple for theoretical physicists, but the author has spared the narratives for leaner and lucid descriptions in the hopes that these ideas stir up some interest among readers. There is no math and no heavy discussion of relativity or quantum physics. String physics is not included in this discussion. This is certainly a good way to bring modern physics for general readers. This reminds me of Nobel Laureate Richard Feynman’s “Six Easy Pieces: Essentials of Physics Explained.” This book has appeared in many versions and captured the minds of readers in theoretical physics. But Rovelli covers only seven topics that include relativity, quantum physics, particle physics and black holes.

The author is one of the inventors of loop quantum gravity which says that space is not continuous but it is made of grains, significantly smaller than an electron, and they are linked to each other forming a network. Quantum gravity essentially refers to quantum properties of space-time and not the quantum behavior of matter in spacetime. But the author has not discussed loop quantum gravity theory in any depth in this book.

The author muses on human existence and our perception of physical reality. It is a song of god in which matter (energy) behave in spacetime in a certain way, and this guided by a set of physical laws. The Newtonian physics, relativistic physics, quantum physics and thermodynamics somehow connect with each other to create the nature of reality. But we are further away in comprehending it and Carlo Rovelli understands this better than other physicists.

Brilliant and elegant homilies on physics, the nature of scientific endeavor, and being human
By John K. Gayley
This is indeed, a very brief book of very brief lessons or chapters, and it is intriguing, elusive, seductive and ultimately humbling all at once. I’ll need to read it again several times over. The easy elegance and poetry of the writing deceptively masks a whole world of things being described, and the broader, better lessons aren’t really about physics at all.

Hitherto, my last experience with physics was a 2nd semester senior class in high school when, (having been accepted to university), I temporarily lost patience for absorbing further conceptual learning. I did, however, have ample capacity for sniggering at the nerds in the class who were capable of using physics concepts, 3 paper clips and assorted other parts to construct a functioning radio.

I read about this book in the Economist. I bought this book, in part, to atone for my high school sins, and also to finally overcome my phobia of the general theory of relativity. I also wanted it as a quick way to get refreshed on key physics concepts in "bite size" bits, suitable for impressing people at parties. (Because To be impressive at parties, everyone really should have their own "elevator speech" ready on the meaning of the theory of relativity, right?)

This book gave me both more—and less—than I bargained for. I still don’t have my elevator speeches on topics such as relativity, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics or black holes; the lessons are indeed elegant but without sufficient detail to fully master the topics at hand. In fact, if anything, the simplicity and elegance of the book have made me feel even stupider than when I started…”if this Italian Physics professor can describe these things so simply and elegantly, I really must be a half-wit, because I’m still mystified.” (Memo to self: avoid elevators or parties for now.)

However, even in its brevity the book gives a good deal more. There is the enthusiasm and excitement that imbues the (even brief) descriptions of physics and related concepts. I came away with a genuine desire to go after these topics in successively greater levels of detail, in order, finally, to conquer them. At the very least I see another series of sessions with a famous Stephen Hawking book in my future.

The specific physics topics are only the most obvious level in this slim volume. It also touches both implicitly and explicitly on the nature of scientific enquiry, insights into the current bleeding edge physics theories and how they’re developed, and (lastly) how scientists think. To read about this in such effective but matter-of-fact tones was extremely enlightening.

The 7th and final lesson in the book is one which I’ve read three times already, because its so marvelous….a homily by a thoughtful soul on the complexities of the universe, the perceptions and complexities of humans inhabiting their small place in it, and a heartfelt wonder about the ongoing discoveries we have in front of us. The final chapter, “ourselves” really is lovely, and could easily stand alone, with or without the preceding 6 chapters.

I’ve given this five stars. Although it didn’t take me where I thought I wanted to go, it took me someplace else, and much better.

A beautiful and poignant meditation on the laws of physics and our place in the cosmos
By Ash Jogalekar
Every once in a while it's a good idea to stand back from the daily necessities of our lives and look back and marvel at what we as human beings have accomplished in our understanding of ourselves and our universe. In very few instances is this wonder more apparent than in an appreciation of the discoveries that physics has made regarding space and time.

In this short and highly readable book, Italian physicist Carlo Rovelli leads us through a tour of what he thinks are seven of the foremost ideas (or "lessons') in physics. These are ideas which have not just furthered our understanding of our material world but which have also expanded our consciousness and connected us to our origins and future. Rovelli’s writing is often poignant and beautiful, simple and without frills and from the heart, and I would be lying if I said the experience wasn't uplifting. Personally I would have included an extra eighth lesson on chaos theory and complexity since I think those are going to be key scientific issues in the 21st century. Also, there is little new per se in here which would not be familiar to physics aficionados. But as it stands Rovelli's offering is a marvelous feast which should ignite a renewed sense of inspiration regarding the reach and beauty of science even in hardened veterans.

The first lesson is about Einstein's general theory of relativity which saw yet another towering validation this year with the discovery of gravitational waves. The Russian physicist Lev Landau called it the "most beautiful theory" and I would say there would be few contenders for that title. The basic equation of the theory fits on a napkin, and the essentials of the framework are both startling and elegant. As Rovelli explains, Einstein's major breakthrough was to realize that Newton's gravitational field is not a field at all but is spacetime itself. That one insight suddenly elevated all of physics to a completely new level and it opened up previously unimaginable vistas - black holes, neutron stars, radio astronomy, the Big Bang - to deep exploration. Here's Rovelli on the essential craziness of Einstein's equation: "Within this equation there is a teeming universe. And here the magical richness of the theory opens up into a phantasmagorical succession of predictions that resemble the delirious ravings of a madman, but which have all turned out to be true."

The second lesson concerns the other big revolution of twentieth century physics - quantum mechanics. Relativity is astonishing but its basic tenets are easy to understand. In contrast, even the basic tenets of quantum theory - wave particle duality, entanglement, the uncertainty principle - have left even the theory's great founders befuddled. Quantum mechanics is unique in the history of science as a theory which is spectacularly successful in its practical applications while at the same time continuing to be virtually impenetrable in its philosophical implications. It opened up vast new areas of modern life to understanding; without it computers, chemistry, electronics and molecular biology would be inconceivable. And yet the sheer weirdness of its laws continues to defy every commonsense expectation. Rovelli zeroes in on one of the essential qualities of quantum mechanics when he says that its laws "do not describe what happens to a physical system but only how one physical system affects another". I find it interesting that the same interactions which lie at the heart of quantum theory also underlie the science of emergent complex systems like the weather, the stock market, biochemical networks and social networks.

The third chapter talks about the Big Bang theory and the architecture of the cosmos. Rovelli wrote just before the discovery of gravitational waves otherwise he would have included them in his discussion but he talks about many other wonders revealed by Einstein's theory combined with many of the tools of modern physics such as radio telescopes and particle detectors. The culmination of applying relativity to the universe must surely be the discovery of the accelerated expansion of the universe, although the presence of what we call "dark matter" leaves something to be desired.

The fourth lesson tells us how the findings of quantum mechanics led to an explosion of understanding of the building blocks of the cosmos in the postwar years. Quarks and electrons, Higgs bosons and neutrinos all make important appearances in this story. The culmination of all this progress was the Standard Model of particle physics, essentially a kind of periodic table which lists all known particles and their properties. And yet unlike general relativity the Standard Model is incomplete. Many of the particles' parameters are poorly understood, and the model itself is incompatible with general relativity. In addition there are ugly infinities arising in the theoretical treatment of all those particles which have to be tamed by artificially imposed mathematical order. These deficiencies make the Standard Model very much of a model. It is in the Standard Model that we start to glimpse the first troubling signs of how much more we have to discover in fundamental physics. But in trouble lies opportunity and glory, and in one sense the Standard Model only points to the bounty of undiscovered delights which must surely lie ahead.

The fifth lesson tackles one of the greatest scientific facing science, the marriage of general relativity with quantum mechanics; a marriage which as of now seems to end in violent, unholy divorce every time we attempt it. Interestingly there is not a word about string theory, probably because Rovelli himself works on a rival theory called loop quantum gravity. There is a capsule description of the theory which emphasizes again the fact that the framework is less about objects themselves and more about their interconnections. In this case the connections are between tiny quanta of space - which are themselves space.

The sixth lesson takes us on a journey into one of the most exciting frontiers of modern physics: the union of thermodynamics, quantum mechanics and relativity. This union is wondrous and critical because it can help us understand perhaps the deepest question we can ponder: the fact that time seems to flow only in one direction. As Rovelli explains, the arrow of time seems to be inextricably linked with the flow of heat. The second law of thermodynamics and its postulated increase of entropy tracks with the forward arrow of time, although on an individual particle level this arrow is reversible. Figuring out these conundrums of time and thermodynamics will undoubtedly take us into some very novel territory. In this context Stephen Hawking's discovery of radiation emanating from black holes is surely a promising springboard. Time, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, relativity, statistics; it's all here, and it's all tantalizing.

The seventh lesson ties it all up together as Rovelli talks about the ultimate entity that allows us to figure all this out - the human brain. He ponders the delectable paradox that an entity which is composed of particles and fields and quanta can also decipher its own mysteries. Understanding this self-recursive extrapolation should keep us occupied for as long into the future as we can imagine, and it's also what should make us cherish our unique existence as sentient beings on this planet. And yet, as unique as we are, Rovelli reminds us in closing that our lowly origins from elemental life forms and the ordinariness of our planet, our solar system and our galaxy should not blind us to what might be the greatest lesson of all: humility and wonder.

"Here, on the edge of what we know, in contact with the ocean of the unknown, shines the mystery and the beauty of the world. And it's breathtaking".
