First published in 1984, and republished twice since then, Falklands Commando was one of the first eye-witness accounts of combat operations during the Falklands War, and indeed one of the first books on Special Forces missions.

Captain Hugh McManners went in on the first British Special Forces combat mission to land on East Falkland, in preparation for the Royal Navy landings on the Islands. His mission was to prevent an Argentine heavy weapons company guarding the entrance to the Task Force’s intended harbour area from attacking the ships.

The gripping narrative is Hugh’s first-hand account of this most famous of modern British military operations. His position made him part of the planning of this operation as well as one of the field operators – a unique perspective. Hugh describes, with perception and an often a wry sense of humour, life in his five-man Special Forces team, fighting with the Special Boat Squadron.

After near-disastrous small boat ops in heavy seas, gruelling long clearance reconnaissance missions, and tense night helicopter insertions, Hugh’s team finish up on their own, concealed while surrounded by enemy troops, twenty kilometres behind enemy lines. From this very exposed position, they carry out night-firing missions using naval gunships, to destroy Argentine artillery guns, missiles and radars. These targets must be destroyed before the enemy can use them to sink ships, or stop the British Commandos and Paras as they consolidate in the mountains ready for the final set-piece battle.

Then, as the British artillery comes within range, McManners’ team also fire by day. This proves critical, as the Paras and Commandos are heavily shelled while fighting their way into the Argentines’ defensive ring of steel.

This new ebook edition includes a new 2014 introduction, plus the Introductions from each of the three earlier editions, from 1984, 1987 and 2002. These reveal the failures of the British Ministry of Defence post-Falklands and then in the first Gulf War.

About the Author
Hugh McManners was Sunday Times Defence Correspondent for 5 years and is a television producer and presenter. He was brought up in Tasmania and New South Wales and educated at Magdalen College School, Oxford and Oxford University. He went into the Army in 1972, and joined 148 Commando Observation Battery in 1978. He was mentioned in despatches for his service in the Falklands War.

A solid three stars: could have been four but for the personal ramblings of a clearly disaffected person.

This would be a four star book but for the rant at the beginning of the book in which the author slams the MoD over and over. He might have some valid points, but it just comes across as bitter and immature, when the book itself is witty and sometimes enthralling. I'd recommend skipping the pre amble and go to the first chapter. A decent book with some good humour, interspersed - as with any war - with a good deal of tragedy. It does make you wonder reading this book that if the Argentine army had been half as courageous and well trained as their Air Force what the outcome might have been.
I knew little about the role of a military soldiers' role as a forward observation operative, but this portrays it well for the lay person.
Worth a read once you get past the whinging.
One thing the author does do well is convey the importance of supporting soldiers who have been through a traumatic time and the need for proper communications, it's just a shame this is a bit lost at the beginning.

"Falklands Commando" is Captain Hugh McManners' well-written memoire of his service as a commando forward observer with the British Army in the short, fiercely contested 1982 war with Argentina over the remote Falkland Islands.

The sudden Argentine invasion of the Falklands took Britain by surprise. McManners captures the controlled chaos of the departure of an expeditionary force to the South Atlantic to retake the islands. At sea, his small party had limited opportunities to train and prepare aboard over-crowded ships. Once off the Falklands, horrendous weather, difficult terrain, and the Argentine military itself created additional challenges to getting ashore and coming to grips with the enemy.

With more than a little understated humor and much fascinating personal detail, McManners describes the operations ashore, as his team leap-frogged across the islands, calling in naval gunfire in support of special operations forces. His narrative columinates with the British Army in command of the heights above Port Stanley and the Argentine military hopelessly trapped.

The Falkslands War is a long way back in the rear view mirror, but "Falklands Commando" has plenty to offer in the way of lessons learned for war on an austere budget in a remote location. It is highly recommended to students of expeditionary warfare.

Extremely exciting history of Harlem's culture - 1890-1935.

Beyond the speakeasys, definitive cabarets and birth of contemporary black America based in Harlem, Mr. Lewis has given us a poignant and hard-hitting study that pitifully few whites and most contemporary blacks know about. My God! The story of the 369th Infantry Regiment marching up 5th Avenue raised the hair on my arms. The poets, playwrights, noveslists of the period are still a volatile inspiration today.The roots, "why's" and "who's" of Marxism, Garveyism and "how" they made sense as movements became clear for the first time. This piece of work is a must read for anyone who considers themselves knowledgable about culture of any race in this country. We carry a shameful legacy of mistreatment of ourselves and our brothers, and the thrust of the first Harlem Rennaisance (1920-35) was that art,(literature and the arts) could influence politics and the government in this country to make them more humane and less extreme, whether left or right. The Rennaisance didn't work as effectively as anyone had hoped, but the results of the cultural struggle, as real as the physical struggles, are coming to fruition over the last 60 years. Now maybe the fruit is ripe enough to share between us all. Lewis offers a banquet of information, stories, names, dates and situations that made me wish I could have been a part of the magnificent movements he has so elegantly documented. There was a world before TV and the internet - a world where people had dialogues, exchanged impassioned thoughts and attitudes as a lifestyle, and shared bared Souls in the hope of expanding their minds and freeing a race from the most insulting racial intolerances. To read this book is to be a part of the struggle and to have the opportunity to commit to the ever expanding culture lost to so many generations. Somehow I guess the poetry of Claude McKay could be the root of Hip Hop. Would he approve, and would the current generation appreciate the perspective? Time will tell

The Crowded Party

The Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s opened a fascinating chapter in American life, heralding the first time African-Americans were taken seriously as poets, novelists, painters, composers, and intellectuals by a broad white audience. David Levering Lewis is maybe too close to the figures he talks about to do them justice. Reading his book is like being at a crowded cocktail party with a friend who seems to know everyone and only has time for brief introductions before moving on to the next guest. You get just a glimpse of Renaissance luminaries like Claude McKay, Countee Cullen, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Jean Toomer, Jessie Fauset, Wallace Thurman, and the imperious W.E.B. Du Bois before they disappear back into the swim of names.

On the upside, Lewis does a fine job of shedding light on the behind-the-scenes maneuvering of the African-American elites--the 'Talented Tenth'--who hoped to use the new vogue for all things black as a way of dissolving race prejudice. Insofar as the book has an argument, it's that Harlem grandees like Alain Locke, James Weldon Johnson, Charles S. Johnson, and W.E.B Du Bois who saw intellectual achievement as an antidote to racism learned a hard lesson with the onset of the Depression, where economic reality squashed their assimilationist dreams and a new generation of black intellectuals opted for Communism over poetry.

The book left me wanting to know more about the white supporters of the New Negro Movement--patrons like Carl Van Vechten, the Spingarns, Julius Roswenwald, and the redoubtable Charlotte Osgood Mason, "Godmother" to Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston--who held the purse strings and much of the power in deciding which expressions of Harlem life made it to the mainstream. The louche world of jazz, nightclubs, liquor, rent parties, razor fights and skin-baring dancers that largely defined Harlem in the white imagination also goes pretty much unexplored in favor of Top Tenth aspirations to join the upper middle class. There's a disappointing reticence too about homosexuality among the era's leading lights. Still, it's a great book for piquing interest in some of the tensions and achievements that went into making Harlem the heart of the Roaring Twenties

A zesty account

Claude McKay and Jean Toomer helped to launch the Harlem Renaissance and chose to live elsewhere. Sterling Brown denied that a Harlem Renaissance had ever existed. It began as a somewhat forced phenomenon.
DuBois believed the history of the world was the history of groups. War experiences spurred people to seek decisive change. Unfortunately a number of racial incidents took place directly after Word War I. The historian Carter Woodson was witness to a riot in Washington D.C.
Black Harlem ran from 130th to 145th Streets. Jazz and blues in Harlem were produced by persons from the Great Migration--Mamie Smith, Perry Bradford, and others. There were new stars in Harlem. Claude McKay and James Weldon Johnson became personal friends. MacKay's HARLEM SHADOWS appeared in 1922. Countee Cullen said that on the whole he liked CANE by Jean Toomer. Countee Cullen's only serious rival in Harlem was Langston Hughes.
Alain Locke and Charles Johnson, a sociologist, made contributions to the intellectual life of the Harlem leadership. Arna Bontemps and Zora Neale Thurston were also notable figures. Many motives animated the Lost Generation Caucasian supporters. The motives included guilt, Christianity, inherited abolitionism.
There were rent parties in Harlem and other evidence of stress and overcrowding. Nonetheless the twenties was a time of artistic triumph with such musical personalities James P. Johnson, Willie the Lion Smith, Fats Waller, and Duke Ellington seeking and finding engagements. There were success stories. Even in the Depression people were generally well-dressed and happy. Harlem was filled with strivers and professionals.
1925 was year one of the Harlem Renaissance. James Weldon Johnson's ancestors had been free, literate, and prosperous before the Civil War. He and his brother composed an opera. The mid twenties solidified the Harlem Renaissance. Harlem was Afro-America's Paris. LULU BELLE (1926) sent whites to Harlem in unprecedented numbers. Factually speaking, though, most of Harlem was sober and hardworking.
The Rosenwald Fund and the Harmon Fund were influential by promoting and rewarding African American artistic achievement. Alain Locke had been a sort of custodian of the Harlem Renaissance. Claude McKay's last novel appeared in 1933. Sugar Hill, Strivers' Row and the Dunbar were landmarks of the Renaissance. The last novel of the Renaissance was Zora Neale Thurston's JONAH'S GOURD VINE.
The book covers other topics interestingly, revealing many bits of information previously unknown to this reader. Photographs are included and an appendix of sources.

He knew the FBI would have their apartment under surveillance, so he and Earlene couldn't even stop there for a change of clothes. But if they could just make it through the night, he had a friend who could get them some money and the documents they would need to escape across the border into Mexico. Warjac knew someone had ratted on them. He wasn't sure if there was anyone he could trust. So they pulled into a parking lot north of Los Angeles and got some sleep on the beach. Warjac was driving along Sunset Boulevard when two special agents from the FBI saw the Buick convertible and forced them to stop. "Get out of the car with your hands up," one of the agents said. Warjac, my father, was under arrest.

You can't make this stuff up!

As an amateur mob historian I noticed this book about an interesting character from, of all places, Fort Wayne Indiana. OK, so it's not Chicago, but I fugured the location still might make for a curious read for this midwesterner so I purchased it. What a pleasant surprise! An authentic, well-researched first hand account from the son of who may just be the most interesting man caught up in the golden age of the underworld. Mr. Swain poured his heart out in this brutally honest account of how, with the right combination of charm and audacity, a one-time small-town hustler can run under the radar with some of the most notorious names in the business. As I was reading I could not help but think that this is the Forrest Gump of the dark side -- the guy who is somehow there when some of the biggest names and notorious events of the 50's and 60's were taking place. Spoiler alerts with every chapter, so I won't say any more than you won't be disappointed. Just waiting for someone with the right connections to make this into a screenplay. This would make a great movie or mini-series.

This book documents the mis-spent life of a youth caught up in crime. The results of his actions have a profoundly negative effect on his son Greg Swaim, who authors this book. The book is well researched and follows the life of a man who led multiple, and secretive, lives. His criminal activities led him to many contacts with underworld characters and entertainment stars. He is apprehended by police on several occasions, but, somehow seems to avoid any significant penalty. This brings up the question as to the possibility he was an undercover agent for some law enforcement agency. Warjac appears to be an intelligent person, but, not smart enough to know right from wrong.
A good read about the life of a criminal.

A Must Have Guide

I read No More Headaches: Enjoying Sex and Intimacy in Marriage in a about a week, which for me as rather quickly. I found myself captured by the realness of this book and couldn't find it in myself to put it down. I think it goes to show how much women really need a book like this in dealing with the know hows of understanding sex in a God centered marriage relationship.

Author Juli Slattery has done a great job discussing the sensitive subject of sex by communicating a little more than her own hurts and frustrations. Sex is not the easiest subject to understand and talk with each other about, but in this book ways are suggested to approach it cautiously.

Through scripture and real life stories the reader is shown several different approaches in their own behavior to help heal & mend their own personal sexual relationship. You'll find issues dealing with pornography, a man's sex drive, fatigue, children, boredom, past sexual issues, your body, and more.

Sorry guys, this book is written for women, though I am sure a man could definitely learn a thing or two. Ladies, if your spouse is interested, you could go through the chapters together and talk about the various information found throughout this book. I think it's good for not only women to understand the differences of man but also for men to understand the differences of woman when it comes to sex.

I would recommend this book to married and engaged women of all ages, as I know we all could use it in handling the good, bad, and ugly relational issues that come with marriage. 5 stars!

A helpful general overview

No More Headaches: Enjoying Sex & Intimacy in Marriage (Tyndale/Focus On The Family) would make a helpful read for a monogamous wife and mother of a couple of young kids who has been married for about 10 years. Dr. Juli Slattery tackles differences between men and women in this overview of married sexuality, coaching her readers toward a greater commitment to their mates, themselves and God.

She's frank without being salcious, and discusses desire, physiology, our past baggage, life in our hyper-sexualized society, and the effects of parenthood on intimacy in far more detail than you'd hear at church, but less detail (thank you) than you'd hear on Oprah. Slattery would affirm my own (thank you) response - she observes that younger and older women tend to have different comfort levels with discussions about sex. Younger women who have been brought up in our sex-saturated culture keep far more on the table when discussing their sex lives with their friends than we boomer women do. My own experience working with college women has confirmed this.

She does a good job connecting the physical to the emotional and spiritual, while avoiding specific prescriptions (how adventurous should a couple get?) in favor of general principles. Slattery's friendly writer's voice and lots of anecdotes from her own counseling practice make the book like a heart-to-heart conversation with a smart, wise Christian girlfriend - and a useful overview/gentle course correction for some church-going women.

Got My Husband's Attention!

My husband heard Juli Slattery on a radio program and suggested I get the book. I figured something which would take away all my headaches would be GREAT!!
As I looked closer I realized the book was encouraging Christian wives to claim and enjoy the intimacy which marriage only provides without guilt or embarassment.
My husband was even willing to sit with me and take turns reading this book with me. Generally it is written to women, but I felt that it helped my husband understand better how women experience sexual intimacy.
It has been educational and freeing even for us who have been married 36 years.
If you want more intimacy in your marriages women, READ THIS BOOK!!!
I'm glad we did.

Good but very short

The book has some very good tips and info on pointillism but it's very, very short. If it was a printed book, I'd say it was no more than 10 pages. I know it says vol 1, but I would think they could've got a lot more in.

Will get you thinking...

Mr. Crawford has obviously been thinking about interactive storytelling for a while. Like his previous books, the reader will be most fufilled if they approach the material with both an open mind and a critical eye. His writing style is both his strength and weakness, in that it will likely turn away skeptical readers quickly, but allows for a very dense amount of information for a book this size, without a lot of meandering and wishy-washy blather. You probably won't agree with him on everything, but certainly every assertion he makes is worth pondering over.

The possibilities of this medium are exciting to just about anyone, but there have continued to be a set of Hard problems that cause theorists to continue to stumble. Crawford proposes that many of these problems are too hard to think about solving anytime soon, or are indeed impossible to solve. Instead, he provides creative abstractions that obviate the problems so that we can get someplace tantalizingly close to a workable model.

The biggest problem with this being that there are no examples. Crawford's assertions are indeed well thought-out and documented, but there is no concrete back-up. I find this forgivable however, considering that even though the ideas are not entirely complete, they do tackle many problems head-on that previously went unanswered.

Another minor point is that while much time is spent on the inner mechanics of a theoretical storytelling engine, little time is spent on how these stories might actually be presented to the user. I believe this to have a pretty significant impact on how the engine might work. One can imagine many possibilities for how interactive stories might be protrayed, and this certainly has an impact on how they would be perceived.

A dense, exciting book that particuarly those in the games industry should read and think about. I look forward to his future work.

Not Just a Must-Read, It's a Must-Study.

This book opened up a whole new pattern of thinking for me. The information Mr. Crawford conveys in this publication is invaluable to any writer seeking to break into new areas-particularly gaming and other applications utilizing interactive storytelling. Writing for this genre requires a whole different mindset from traditional genres and Mr. Crawford succeeds at moving the reader towards that mindset.
Time and again I see in game reviews how a particular game has "awesome graphics and great gameplay but the story and dialogue" were severely lacking. With Mr. Crawford's extensive experience in the gaming industry, he very capable gives aspiring writers every tool he or she will need to get a very good start in the industry. Throughtout the book, he stresses how important it is for the "artsie" thinkers (the writers & artists) to work together with the "techie" thinkers (the programmers) and I think this is a valuable lesson that many current game producers have yet to learn. Mr. Crawford reminds the entire programming industry that one sector of development cannot succeed without the other. He more than adequately investigates and chronicles how the different development teams can work together and bridge the "communication" gap between the "artsies" and the "techies."
This book, while not exactly a tutorial piece, offers many examples and exercises to move the writer along in thinking like an interactive storyteller. The only real drawback may be the detail Mr. Crawford goes into. While I personally don't have a problem with this, I work with several young people who, while they are very keen on gaming development, probably wouldn't spend an adequate amount of time studying the information contained in the book unless it were required reading in a course.
Personally I feel that any writer who wants to pursue and develop stories for interactive programming should study this book. It's not enough to read it through once, twice or even three times. This is a book which needs to be worked through section by section, until writing for this relatively new genre becomes second nature. This book will have a permanent home in my library; it is very rich in information-hats off to Mr. Crawford for producing a very timely manual.

This book was SO tedious, boring and PAINFUL to try to get through, that I just gave up and donated it to Good Will. There are MUCH better books out there that demystify storytelling...and this one isn't it. Really, it isn't rocket science but you'd never know that by this book.
