Invaluable Holocaust testimony

This book tells the remarkable and moving story of Dr Alina Brewda, a Jewish woman doctor who survived the horrors of the Nazi occupation of Poland and the Holocaust through her innate courage and a series of astonishing miracles.
Dr Brewda was a witness to many of the events and atrocities suffered by the Jewish people before and during the Second World War.
In 1936 Alina travelled to pre-state Israel , then referred to as 'Palestine', to attend a Jewish medical conference. During her crossing to the Holy Land, Arab pogroms broke out and 22 Jews were murdered. The slaughter by Arab mobs of many more Jews caused sadness to descend on the conference and parties and receptions were cancelled.
After the Nazi invasion of Poland, where Alina lived, Alina was subjected to the most diabolical suffering and humiliations. together with millions of Polish Jews.
After that the brutal evacuation of Jews to the Warsaw Ghetto into which hundreds of thousands of Jews were packed. As the Nazis advanced eastwards the Jews from Warsaw and elsewhere in Nazi-occupied Poland were joined by Jews from eastern Poland and then from the Soviet territories. As the author describes : "They arrived by the thousands tired and grimy, they camped in the courtyards, slept on the streets and scavenged for crusts and the refuge. The hunger was so accute that children cried in agony and mothers held out lean claw like hands begging for food. Many lay in the streets, their bodies swollen through hunger."
While living under cover during the first deportations from Warsaw to the death camps, the Nazis launched their evil and diabolical campaign for the extermination of all Jewish children, in order to prevent the continuity of the Jewish race. "Alina had already seen Jewish children savagely shot in the streets. She had seen a newly born child snatched from it's mother and flung out of a sixth story window. She had seen mothers about to be taken to the umschlagplatz hide their little children in their knapsacks, and give them pills to prevent their betraying their presence by crying. She had also seen how the Germans into every knapsack to make sure no children survived".
Alina witnessed the evacuation of the children of Dr Janusz Korkzac's Jewish orphanage from where they were taken to Treblinka and gassed.
Alina escaped death at the hands of the Nazis a second time and witnessed the astonishing valour of the Warsaw ghetto uprisings, and it's horrific crushing by the German forces in which thousands of Jewish men, women and children were burned to death in flaming buildings or drowned in sewers.
When Alina was transported to Birkenau and Auschwitz she remained alive because the Nazis needed her skills as a doctor and she was appointed medical superintendent in Auschwitz' Block Ten. she secretly helped many including the hundreds of young Greek Jewish girls and did all she could to ease their suffering as they were subjected to horrific medical experiments and brutal sterilization surgery without the use of anaesthetics.
Finally Alina witnessed the gassings at Auschwitz of hundreds of thousands of Jewish men, women and children. Alina herself escaped being gassed by a series of miracles. She played a part in the underground resistance in Auschwitz and recounts the ill fated revolt of the Jewish sonderkommandos in Auschwitz.
After the liberation of Auschwitz and end of the war, Alina continued her work as a doctor among survivors, before marrying a veteran of General Anders Polish army, Simon Bialostocki, a Polish lawyer. They lived together in a charming house in north London where Alina had her surgery.
Dr Alina Brewda testified as a key witness in the defence of the author Leon Uris and his publisher during the libel case brought against them by Dr. W.A. Dering ho claimed his reputation had been destroyed by statements in Uris' novel about a "Dr. Dehring," who performed sterilization and castration experiments on Jewish prisoners in Auschwitz during World War II in his novel Exodus
