Great Resource!
By Dyvgrl
I purchased this kit because I was going into a 3/4 Combo Class and the students in my school struggled with reading comprehension. It was a great resource to have when the one class was done with their work. The students were given options for "what to do when I am done" board. The students had to do SRA then take AR tests, then has various other choices like work in handwriting books Spelling books, Vocabulary book, or read a library book etc. The levels ranged from 2nd grade to 7th grade. It was challenging for some at the beginning, but once the students got the hang of it, they did great! I was amazed at the growth. One surprise bonus was that test anxiety diminished. They felt confident in their ability to take reading comprehension tests.

Terrific artbook
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:mo1QLIOLZ2V76RX]]This is quite possibly the best Assassin's Creed artbook so far. It's a terrific video game artbook.

It's a big 192-page hardcover published by Titan Books with most of the artworks are printed big to the page edges.

Many concept paintings featured are actually collage of photographs and art. Look closely and you'll see photos erased and digitally manipulated to form the shape and composition required.

You might that that the photo and art collage style is cheating. The thing is, they look amazing. As concept paintings, they capture the mood and atmosphere really well. This is in part because the colour values are captured correctly, resulting in a convincing environment. The photo and art collage style when not well done, even by a bit, can result in a fake look. Well, all the paintings in this book look great to me. The end result looks more like art than photos.

A nice improvement over the previous artbook The Art of Assassin's Creed III is that details are no longer hidden in shadows. Even when they are hidden, they are done so suggestively, with details fading to vague masterfully.

Character designs are mainly of the pirates, and of course of the main character Edward Kenway. Costume designs are really detailed. Who knew 18th century pirates can be so fashionable. Artist Patrick Lambert's rough paintings look expressive and just great.

There are lots of environment art. Many of the environment art pieces are inspired by location visits.

The design team visited Spanish city Havana in order to create the Havana in the game, a beautiful coastal town that is described by Spanish colonist at "Key to the New World" at that time. It's lively, full of people, activities. There are not just beautiful town houses, but also the poorer middle class people with tattered roofs. The other places are Kingston, a city in Jamaica, or as pirates claim the "Wickedest City on Earth". There's also Nassau, city of Bahamas. For Nassau, there's also a concept art inspired directly by the Queen's Staircase.

Other locations included are the fortified shipwreck, fishing villages built on stilts, tropical hideouts, Mayan temples, mangroves and coves, jungles, campfire night scenes and more. Every location has several paintings to convey the idea of the whole place. There's even a whole city designed, Port au Prince, that was cut from the game. At least the art remains in the book.

Designs for the pirate ships are detailed, interiors inclusive. There are several ships, namely Jackdaw, Blackbeard's Queen Anne's Revenge, Black Bart's The Royal Fortune, Benjamin Hornigold's The Benjamin, The Governor, The Ranger, Calico Jack, Spanish Man of War and other ships from the British Navy. Yes, lots of ship. And there are also many paintings with pirates working on the deck, big ships, small boats, on fire or blown to bits.

There are also scenes from underwater, with submerged shipwrecks, and also sharks with eyes that say "We want to eat you".

Ubisoft art team has truly put together some amazing art, and well compiled by author Paul Davies.

Highly recommended to those who like concept art and fans of the game.

Pirates, Jungle, Treasures Galore!
By Erik Massie
I want to make a quick note, I've ordered the actual game for the PS4, so I obviously haven't played it yet (as it doesn't come out for another couple of weeks as of this writing) but I bought this book anyway because I needed something to hold me over until I can finally boot up the disc.

For anyone in the same boat and worried that this book might contain spoilers for the game, I can tell you it really doesn't spoil anything at all, at least from what I can tell. You get a look at different locations, characters, and some ships, but it doesn't give away any major plot points or twists from the images/descriptions presented within its pages. So feel free and safe to browse and skim and read cover to cover without fear of ruining your eventual gaming experience.

As for the book itself, it's hardcover with a nice dust jacket that has embossed lettering. The inside panels of the front and back panels is lined with what I assume is a map of the game's worlds/islands. The pages are sorta thick and of nice quality. Nothing feels cheap here. The book covers sections of different locations, characters, some weapons, and ships among other things. Most illustrations are nice and bright (fitting with the tropical theme I guess) and are usually pretty big, covering at least half the page most of the time. I will say though I was expecting there to be more computer/3D renderings of weapons, characters, etc, but most of the art (in fact, maybe ALL of it) is the brush/paint style (which I'm sure was still done via computer). So anyone expecting clear cut images of people and ships and stuff, you may be somewhat disappointed. But for those who enjoy the particular painting style and are moreso just looking to get a good understanding of the colors/atmosphere of this game, you should be pretty happy with this.

I like pirates, and buried treasure, and the ocean and all that, so I find the art in this book to be very beautiful. It may not be the best video game art book I've ran across, but it manages to show how the themes and moods of the upcoming game came to be, and that's good enough for me. It's a nice addition to my collection, which I'll enjoy looking over time and time again.

Great Concept Art from Assassin's Creed IV
By Adam Silvia
Wow, what a stunning art book that amazes you at every page. This book is filled with behind the scenes concept art from Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag. The book offers a highly detailed look at every city, weapon, character, ship, and jungle that you can explore in the game. The art in this book gives the game itself, so much more justice, and makes you appreciate the game much more. You can even fell the emotion on every page.

Review

A welcome addition to the bookshelves of missionary literature.  Dr. Peters has done a remarkable job in dealing with the fundamental issues of missions today.  It is truly a study book and should be studied thoroughly by all who have any interest in the field of missions.
-Calvary Review

A major work on missions from an evangelical viewpoint . . . a good job of setting forth the biblical teaching on missions and refuting modern liberal alternatives.
-The Banner of Truth

Throughout the book, certain emphases come through loud and clear: the theocentricity of the Christian missions, the importance of proclamation, the centrality of the local church and the lordship of Christ.  A solid and significant contribution to the literature on missiology.
-Eternity

Probably no specifically missionary book has ever undertaken as profound and comprehensive a treatment of the subject as this one.  The distinctiveness of the book is the way in which it unifies and integrates the whole range of theological themes in and around the idea of missions.  There is here a view of missions that is authentically biblical and soundly theological, and in the inimitable style of Professor George W. Peters.
-Alliance Witness

A thorough survey . . ."
-Christianity Today

This book is scholarly, spiritual and easy reading because of the warm missionary compassion that flows through its chapters.
-Presbyterian Journal

A Biblical Theology of Missions
By Mondok
This book just showed up in my office one day. I'm thankful that books find their way into my hands. This book is the most thorough work on missiology I've ever read. I'll be honest, I don't like to mark up my books (especially the ones that have that new book smell), but I marked up, circled, and note scribbled everywhere in this book.

"It is my impression that the Bible is not a book about theology as such, but rather, a record of theology in mission - God in action in behalf of the salvation of mankind."

George W. Peters writes like an academic, but it's good for you to read a little over your head (in my case, a lot over my head).

How about this:

"The Bible is the basis and source of faith and not the result of faith."

Pretty good, huh? You wish you said that.

Everyone that is serious about going into the mission field or serious about teaching about missions should have this book in his or her library. I'll refer to this book over and over through out my ministry, I'm sure.

A biblical and theological argument for missions
By Commissionary
Why you should read this book...

-Helps you develop a solid missionary theology that is biblically sound

-Defends missiology as a legitimate (and central) theological discipline

-Emphasizes a Trinitarian missionary theology, with special emphasis on the centrality of Christ

-Very practical for both the individual and the church

-Expounds on the definition and role of a missionary

Favorite Quotes...

The Great Commission does not make Christianity a missionary religion. The latter is such because of its source, nature, and total design. The apostles became missionaries not because of a commission but because Christianity is what it is and because of the indwelling Holy Spirit who is an outgoing and witnessing Spirit...Thus, if the particular words of the Great Commission had never been recorded or preserved, the missionary thrust and responsibility of the church would not be in the least affected. It prospers wherever Christianity is truly known, thoroughly believed, genuinely experienced, and implicitly obeyed. (p173)

A missionary is not one who has gone out, but one who has been sent out. (p252)

Let us not hurry until the call has matured. Too many are running, not necessarily without a call of God, but without a matured call of God. (p285)

The gospel of Jesus Christ as recorded in the Bible is the only and sufficient remedy for this basic need. The missionary, therefore, must remain constant in the proclamation of the gospel of God. Only thus is he loyal and true to the call of God. (p288)

Christianity can never be disassociated from Christ as the eternal Son of God, the historic Son of Man, and the present glorified Lord, Mediator and High Priest at the right hand of the throne of God. Christ is the very essence of Christianity. (p346)

A church that does not recognize the primacy of missions deprives herself of the most intimate relationship with her Lord, fails to identify herself with the primary purpose of God, robs her membership of the deepest experiences of the Holy Spirit, and denies the world the greatest blessings the Lord in grace has provided. She ceases to be truly Christian. (p350)

The Perfumed GardenFrom Brand: Park Street Press

The Perfumed Garden - for the Repose of the Mind is a classic work of Arab erotica offering a uniquely entertaining collection of tales, frank and sound advice on sexual relations, and a poetic style of great literary merit. This is a book which delights in the humorous possibilities of sexual expression, and treats these in an urbane style reminiscent of Chaucer and Boccaccio. Also included in the first illustrated edition is a remarkable collection--previously unpublished--of early Mughal and other rare erotic paintings. Reproductions of exquisite tilework and friezes offer a rare glimpse of the Arabian palaces and harems that provide much of the inspiration for the original text. Over 50 full-color illustrations.

Review
"An explicit, but also consummately witty and graceful celebration of erotica." (Libido)

"The Park Street Press edition is the first illustrated reproduction of Burton's original translation. Buy it. Read it. Enjoy it. The Victorians did, even if they claimed they didn't. You won't be disappointed." (Ben Trumble, Whole Earth Review)

About the Author
Sir Richard F. Burton (1821-1890) was one of the greatest traveler-explorers of history, whose life has recently been chronicled both in biography (Captain Sir Richard Burton) and film (Mountains of the Moon).

Nicely illustrated, but very much edited...
By Agathodaimon
My girlfriend and I checked out an older edition of the Perfumed Garden from our local library, and indulged in some "bedtime reading" aloud to each other. What we liked the most about the book was the storytelling element rather than the didactic. We decided we wanted to own a copy, and purchased this one, only to be disappointed. There's a large part of Burton's original translation missing here, mostly missing stories, and of those that remain, the wonderfully corny dialogue is edited out. Don't get this edition if you're looking for the whole enchilada...

Interesting translation and attractive illustrations.
By A Customer
This is a colorful and pleasant book. The many illustrations are from the period and place of the text. That is India in the distant past. Burton worked from an original French translation, and his work is direct and to the point. In some ways this book reads like a cookbook of sex, and that is a reasonable description of it. It is a nice addition to anyone's library.

An exotic and graphic look at sex
By A Customer
Sir Richard Francis Burton is able to give the arabic text some meaning. This is a very erotic book because of the illustrations. I found mine at a public library- downtown branch- This is a book that celebrates human love and sexuality better than any other I have ever read

Children Who See Too Much: Lessons from the Child Witness to Violence Project, by Betsy Mcalister Groves

For the last ten years Betsy Groves has been working with children traumatized by witnessing violence. In this book she shows how children understand, respond to, and are affected by violence, especially domestic violence. Groves makes the powerful case that traumatic events carried out by family members carry the most severe psychological risks for very young children. She uses clinical case studies to show that being young does not protect against the lasting effects of witnessing violence, and she offers ways adults can help.

From Publishers Weekly
The need for a book to help parents and caregivers whose children have seen violence has never been more apparent than in the days following the September 11 terrorist attacks on the U.S. While Boston Medical Center's 10-year-old Child Witness to Violence Project is specifically designed to do just that, this book by the project's founder, a licensed social worker, disappoints. The project, which works with young children who have witnessed evil firsthand (e.g., a parent's murder) or who are traumatized by news stories (such as the kidnapping of Polly Klass from her home), clearly has done much good in helping children cope. When Groves focuses on specific stories, like four-year-old Daquan, who was at home when his mother was murdered, or Jenna and Ben, who were present when their father attacked their mother, the book comes alive. But too often Groves strays from her subject and offers mini-primers on child development theories or television violence that are not nearly as insightful as her work with kids. Despite a tendency to oversummarize in order to pad out this slim and somewhat uncohesive volume, Groves does make an impassioned case that youth is not a protection against violence and that domestic violence in particular has the most devastating effect on children. She warns that there are no quick fixes to help young children. What matters most is "the adult behind the strategy who says, `I will listen to you' or `I believe you can succeed.' "Her six-step plan for changing the world includes such commonsense notions as offering children steady, loving relationships and reintroducing civility into daily life. (Feb. Forecast: At press time, Beacon did not have plans to accelerate this book's publication schedule, so while many parents and educators could benefit from Groves's advice right now, they may have to wait until February. But by then, the shelves will probably be packed with related titles, thus stunting this one's potential.

From Library Journal
These two books, which were both written before the terrorist acts of September 11, 2001, address children's exposure to violence in America. Based on the counseling and therapy programs of the Child Witness to Violence Project at Boston Medical Center (of which Groves is the founder), Children Who See Too Much is a slim but substantial book. The author's premise is simple: today's children are exposed to violence almost daily on TV, in video games, and, too frequently, in real life. Those who witness violence in their homes are not protected by their youth from its consequences; such violence leaves an indelible mark on the chemistry of their brains. Parents, professionals, and communities have a special role to play in helping such children cope with trauma. Readers will not find simple answers here; instead, Groves provides six practical steps that will help parents create a safer world, regardless of neighborhood or race. The Boston Medical Center model presented in this book is clearly a valuable one for other communities to copy. A chatty though helpful nuts-and-bolts how-to book, "Not My Kid" takes 21 chapters to present 21 steps on how to nurture nonviolent children. Muscari (nursing, Univ. of Scranton) begins by defining normal/abnormal behaviors in children of all ages. Then she guides parents through the specifics of raising nonviolent children even though the world around them is violent, arguing that the responsibility for eradicating drug use, bullying, intolerance, domestic abuse, and gun violence lies with parents and communities. In light of recent events, both of these excellent books may be in demand, Muscari's more by parents and Groves's more by community leaders. ["Not My Kid" is also available as a video, ISBN 1-58966-009-9, $19.95. Ed.] Linda Beck, Indian Valley P.L., Telford, P.

From Booklist
Groves, founder of the Child Witness to Violence Project at Boston Medical Center, dramatically disproves the myth that very young children are not affected by violence. Drawing on her experiences with the project, Groves contends that many children in the U.S. witness violence on television and in their own lives and that adults can and should help these children cope with their reactions. She dispels other myths--that violence happens primarily among low-income and minority populations--providing case studies from a cross section of families. Children most often witness violence in their own homes, generally directed at their mothers, and experience reactions ranging from attempts to mediate and comfort to denial and withdrawal. Her heartbreaking case studies also involve children who have witnessed violence in their communities, from assaults to murders. She strongly recommends that parents, teachers, and other child-care providers actively encourage children to talk about the violence they've witnessed and also seek professional help for children who have been traumatized by violence. A compelling read and an invaluable resource
By Janet Carter
Whether you know a little or a lot about the impact of exposure to violence on children, this book is a compelling and powerful read. "Children Who See Too Much" is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to recognize and understand how we can help children impacted by violence, whether we are their teachers, social workers, mental health professionals, child welfare workers, other professionals, friends, or family members. Ms. Groves has woven together a compelling tapestry of children's stories, research findings, professional experience working directly with children, and thoughful policy and practice recommendations. The information on how to talk to your children about terrorism and war makes this book particularly relevant in the complex world that children and their parents must now negotiate. Ms. Grove's extensive experience as a pioneer in the field of helping children exposed to violence has provided an invaluable resource and a must-read for those who care about the well-being of children and their families.

Excellent read for professionals and parents
By LovestoRead
Excellent book for professionals who deal with children or domestic violence and for parents who have been in domestic violence situations with their children. I read it several years ago when I checked it out of the library and decided it was definitely worth having in my library at work. I am a family law attorney and want to have it available for any clients that might want a closer look at what domestic violence can do to children and how they can help reduce the negative impact of what has already happened.

Depraved world + Magic = Awesome
By PaperFury
Thank you to Random House Aus for the review-copy!

This is a magical book! Literally. It reads like a dystopian (a world of extreme poverty with a tyrannical king, but modern technology), but magical powers are a way of life. That mixture of dystopian + magic = awesome.

The premise was awesome! Premises make up a good 50% of the adoration factor, for me. There’s a billion books about kids who go on a journey to a mythical “paradise”. But most books don’t have over-sized foxes, alchemy bombs, a smart-mouthed pick-pocket, and the ability to create illusions. THAT is why Chasing The Valley stands apart. It sets up an awesome world, but better yet – the world-building increases in epic-ness as the book continues! That, ladies, gentlemen, and aliens, is really good writing.

The plot, on the other hand…meh, not so good. Like I said, you’ve probably read a Journey story a hundred times. Particularly in fantasy. I think the premise and world-building were good enough to stop the plot from being boring…buuut, to be honest, sometimes it dragged. The chapters never ended with cliff-hangers. I was COMFORTABLE the whole time. That’s bad! There wasn’t a pull keep-reading-keep-reading, because I knew nothing hair-raising would happen. It’s a safe read. So, while I kind of enjoyed that (relaxing, okay?), my attention was never 100% caught.

The magic rocked. It was solid! I love it when something fantastical like that is a way of life. There’s no oh-my-gosh-squee-I’m-sixteen-and-therefore-will-discover-I-can-fly/shoot balls of flame/be invisible/have perfect hair. Everyone has a “proclivity”, and it matures when they’re 18. It can be Beast, or Darkness, or Bird, or Fire. Cool stuff. It varied from the usual (ice/fire/water/air sort of stuff). The world-building is just epic. Honest! It is.

Also: HUMOUR! This book is stinking funny. The dialogue? Gorgeous. I could hug it.

Characters? Because it’s a journey, there’s a crew of escaping teens: Danika (narrator), Teddy Nort (pick pocket), Randor (leader), Maisy and Clementine (the rich, snobby twins), aaaaaand Lukas (mysterious gorgeous boy). There’s lots of personalities and they all clash really well. That’s a good thing! The dialogue is awesome. Clementine and Dankia like to have a go at each other every three sentences, and Teddy is HILARIOUS. Laugh-out-loud style. My only problem was with Danika. As a narrator, I expected more from her. She was awesome: street savvy, humorous, tough, and (sometimes) kind. Buuuut, she didn’t grow. I wanted to see her character mature/change/grow by the end of the book. Nope. Nuffin’.

Honestly? I liked this book a lot. But I didn’t love it. It had nearly everything I demand in a book (good dialogue, good writing, excellent premise, humour), but it just didn’t evoke the feels.

The first in a fun filled adventure trilogy!
By Brenda Telford
Danika Glynn was sixteen; alone after her parents and sibling had been killed in the last round of alchemy bombs the king had launched, she struggled for survival. She knew she had to join the king’s army when she turned eighteen – everyone did – but she was determined not to. After all, it was on the king’s orders that her family had been killed; why would she help him to kill others? On the night the bombs struck again, Danika fled to the sewers. It was the only place to be safe from the bombs and the after effects of fire – but there were other refugees sheltering there as well. When she was rejected by the crew of refugees in hiding, she decided to attempt a daring escape. Escape over the city’s walls would mean either death or freedom; a tentative freedom at best, but the lure of the Magnetic Valley was enough to spur her on.

In the frantic scramble over the wall, Danika fired a flare to distract the guards – the consequences of this action were long reaching and meant that she was suddenly a fugitive. But when she joined other refugees their determination to survive was greater than anything any of them had encountered before. With their magical proclivities to help in times of crisis - some were yet to mature – they managed to stay one step ahead of the king’s cruel hunters. But could it remain that way? They were only a group of teenagers; they had no idea who they could trust…

Would the small group of young refugees manage to find their way to the Magnetic Valley? Would they even be safe in the Valley if they did achieve their goal, or was it just a myth that the king couldn’t penetrate that area? One thing Danika knew for sure – they could no longer return to the only home they had ever known…

This is the first in the Chasing the Valley trilogy by Aussie author Skye Melki-Wegner; a fantasy/young adult novel which is full of action and adventure. I thoroughly enjoyed it – it was a fun read with an unlikely heroine. Danika is full of grit and determination and her new friends are the same. I actually purchased the second in the trilogy on finishing this one – I need to find out what happens next! Highly recommended.

GIMME A FOXARY
By Nara Lee
Fast paced and action packed, Chasing the Valley was quite a nice, fast read. From the very start, intrigue is built around the world and the characters, and, as the reader, you're constantly wondering what's going to happen next. The book was quite enjoyable overall, however, I do have to say there were a few minor issues with the world building that perhaps very slightly lowered my enjoyment of the novel (to be honest I'm just being overly nitpicky, but I like my world building to be detailed).

The idea of "proclivities" was rather interesting. If you haven't read the book before, if someone has a proclivity in a particular element/thing it just means that their power is to do with that thing (oh, ever so eloquent, Nara haha). Anyway, for example, one proclivity is Beast. This means that you can understand and command animals. The thing I would have liked explained though, are the smaller details about proclivities. Can I specialise in anything? Anything at all? Like, can it be Cloud, or Tree or something? And why is it that it's taboo to show others your proclivity before you're 18? I feel this wasn't really explained properly. Also, there were these charms which were objects imbued with magic- these really weren't explained either. How are they made? Do they ever run out? I just feel that the world building was slightly shaky because these sorts of questions weren't answered. Perhaps they'll be answered in sequels.

In terms of the world building in general, though, I think it was pretty good overall. It wasn't absolutely amazing, but it was definitely enough to be enjoyable! I quite liked the idea of magic being negated by magnets- which is why the main characters are searching for the Magnetic Valley- the safe haven where the King and his hunters cannot reach them. Also, another thing I loved were the foxaries- these were basically massive foxes that people ride around on. FRICK YES GIVE ME ONE NOW.

I feel like people who like reading books just for the romance wouldn't necessarily like this book. I mean, there was a bit of romance thrown in, but it definitely wasn't the focus of the novel. Which was appropriate and definitely was the way I like it. The focus was much more so on adventure and magic and finding the Magnetic Valley, which I feel is reasonable.

I unfortunately did see the "twist" coming from a mile away- come on, it was so obvious! But it was still nice that one aspect of the twist was something I hadn't expected (although that was more so simply because I hadn't thought about that particular aspect- gah trying not to be spoilery). I also laugh at how the blurb says the "mysterious" Lukas, because, seriously, there is hardly anything mysterious about that kid. It was so glaringly obvious who he is...I really liked him as a character though! It was very interesting to see how the relationship between him and Danika is slowly built up.

The ending was cut off at quite a nice point. It wasn't exceptionally cliffhangery, but there was still definitely the promise of more to come (e.g. the King hasn't been dealt with yet.) I will definitely be reading sequels and look forward to seeing how Melki-Wegener will further develop her characters and her world!
