Emotional Read
By Judy Croome
I've read "EVERY MOTHER'S NIGHTMARE: The Killing of James Bulger", by Mark Thomas. I said this in my review of that book: "Written in 1993, soon after the murder trial of the two ten-year old killers of young Jamie Bulger, this record is sensitive, factual, compassionate and objective." It's also told mainly from Denise Bulger's point of view.

When I saw MY JAMES, written by his father Ralph twenty years after the crime, I bought it to gain another perspective of this horrific crime. I expected to feel much as I had when reading Every Mother's Nightmare: a deep compassion for James and his family, and a horrified shock at the nature of the crime.

Well! Reading this book takes one far beyond compassion. With its easy and accessible style, this is more a written "confession" then it is a biography of young James. The depth of emotion that has poured out of Ralph Bulger's soul had a seismic effect on me: I could not read more than a few pages at a time, which is why it took me so long to read it. Even then, sometimes I could hardly see the pages, I was crying so hard at the level of emotional suffering woven into these words.

MY JAMES can be informally divided into four sections: life with the happy toddler James; his abduction, murder and trial; the release of the two killers; and the return to prison of the one killer for Category Four child pornography.

This book is a cry of pain from a father who has stared into the gruesome face of pure evil and, even worse, has been betrayed by the judicial system that should have eradicated that evil without compunction. As Ralph says, "It was always about Thompson and Venables - their treatment, their recovery, their progress, their education and their human rights. I think that, morally speaking, they gave up their human rights the day they battered and murdered my son."

One has to wonder why the rights of the horrifically tortured victim, James Bulger, were and are considered of less importance than the rights of two people who, when they were mere children, consciously and deliberately chose to do evil when they abducted James on that fateful day with the intent to kill. And still they show no remorse for their crime.

Although Ralph and his family's personal and enduring emotional pain forms the very core of this book, the most powerful impact of this story is that it forces one to address one's deepest beliefs about good versus evil, law versus justice, and anger versus forgiveness.

If this book will linger in my soul for ages, how much worse must it be for the family who actually had to experience this? I can only wish them well as they struggle towards some sort of healing, and hope that they find more joy and less sorrow in the coming years.

A way to support them
By Client d'Amazon
I’m french and I heard about this case recently on internet. We can say that we are used to violence in our world, on the cinema, on tv, on the news (terrorism etc), but a such level of darkness at a such level of age is unbelievable. I bought this book to support the parents though all this nightmare I’m not used to cry when I’m reading but this was too much. James was so cute and the way he loved the song heal the world should be a very nice message to everybody.

A heartwreching story, a tribute to James and the continued fight for justice
By Bio reader
This book is an easy read and one that I couldn't put down. While the father (Ralph) provides as best he can a description of what happened to his baby James and the state of the child's mutilated body, a lot of the book pays tribute to little James Patrick Bulger. There are frequent reminders about what a special child he was and the joy he brought to those who knew him. Also included are accounts of the two convicted child murderers and their backgrounds; the fateful journey of James from the shopping centre to his death; discovery of his body; what Ralph believes the murderers' real motives were in the abduction; Ralph's brother's harrowing ordeal in - and post traumatic stress after - identifying the horrific state of James' body; the investigation; the trial; support from family members and the public; and the murderers' treatment during detention and after their release. Surprising insights are also included about possible surveillance on the Bulger family, possible innocent people killed who were mistaken for one of the killers, and the wrath of the public even years after the crime. A lot of questions are also raised about the handling of the entire case, the treatment of the murderers and their sentencing, their real state of mind, what they really did to James on that fateful day, and whether they have ever felt remorse for what they did to the defenseless young child despite him begging them for mercy.

Whilst the book is written by his father (and Rosie Dunn) and there may be details excluded that they weren't privy to, the book also raises a lot of questions about the justice and social systems in the UK, and why more isn't done for victims or families of violent and sadistic crimes. A very disturbing question raised is why the murderers were secretly taken to James' grave. Even if authorities genuinely felt that it was necessary for the murderers' rehabilitation, one has to ask 'what about the recovery process of James' family, and basic respect for the boundaries of James' final resting place?'. One is left wondering how much regard authorities really give to victims and their families.

I think Ralph presents a very honest account of the events and his experiences, his attempts at coping with the loss and his years of grief and suffering, and considers the opportunities and life that James missed out on and the sort of young man he might have grown up to be. Ralph makes no pretensions about, or apology for, how he feels and what he thinks. He also makes clear what he has evidence for and what has not been verified.

I would recommend the book to those who want a more insightful account of this event and how it affected the families from the father's perspective, but be aware that it is a terribly tragic story. I've given it a 5 star rating because it is well written, very easy to read, gets straight to the crux of everything, and pays tribute to those who deserve it, which not only includes James but also those who supported the family all the way and those who have so far helped in the continuing fight for justice.

Thank you to Ralph Bulger for sharing such a deep, personal and tragic story to the world. It can't have been easy.
