Review
"Drawing inspiration from movies, video games and television shows, more than 60 recipes full of fantasy and science fiction are featured throughout the new cookbook. Lemon cakes - and bowls of brown if you're, um, into that - allow you to eat your feelings after that Game of Thrones season five finale, while other fictional food formulas, including 1UP mushroom cupcakes (Super Mario Cart), Romulan Ale (Star Trek), bacon pancakes (Adventure Time) Moloko Plus (A Clockwork Orange) and lembas (The Lord of the Rings), transport your taste buds into another world." - Creative Loafing
About the Author
The first fictional food recipe Cassandra Reeder made was Tree Star Cookies inspired by The Land Before Time at age six. Her geeky nature combined with her love of cooking led to the creation of geekychef.com. The goal of Geeky Chef is to help the geek community bring their food fantasies to reality. So if you've ever found yourself drooling over Pumpkin Pasties in Harry Potter, curious about Lembas Bread from Lord of the Rings or wondering if the cake is really a lie, this blog is for you. Each dish is thoroughly researched to make the final product taste and/or look as close to the source material as possible. Of course, everyone will imagine differently, but Cassandra hopes to give dedicated geeks a run for their tastebuds.
Cassandra currently lives in Portland with her fiance and pet parrot. Despite what conclusions you may have come to, she is not actually a pirate. Well, she is mostly not actually a pirate.

Bottoms up!
By Myra
Cookbooks are fun. You get to try new things, and some of them might just be… out of this world….
The first recipe I tried was the Butterbeer, as one that looked tasty and relatively easy to make. It took maybe a half hour to put together, although it uses ingredients you probably don’t just have lying around the house, such as nonalcoholic beer (I substituted ginger beer), whole cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and whole allspice. (I forgot to get the cloves, so I substituted ground cloves at 1/4 teaspoon per 3 whole cloves.)
If you google ‘butterbeer recipes’ you’ll find a lot of butterscotch-heavy stuff (like what’s sold at the theme park); this recipe has some of those elements (sans butterscotch) but is also based on the age-old Buttered Beer.
The recipe includes steps for both hot and cold versions. For the hot version, evaporated milk is optional, and I recommend it. I added a couple of tablespoons per glass and it gave it a great creamy texture… and topped it with whipped cream.
My only real complaint about the cookbook is that some of the recipes don’t have pictures. Why not!! So sad. Recipes are much better with pictures—actually, pictures are pretty much required.
However, everything else looks awesome. I want to make the Blue Milk (Star Wars) because… blue milk. And I think the author did a good job of thinking up yummy ingredients for these recipes.
A few I'm excited to try:
Spice Beer (Dune, alcoholic)
Mudder's Milk (Firefly, alcoholic)
Figgins (Discworld, pastry)
Fruity Oaty Bars (Serenity)
Lamb Stew With Plums (Hunger Games)
Shawarma (Avengers—although this is a real, not fantasy, dish)
Cauldron Cakes (Harry Potter)
1Up Mushroom Cupcakes (Super Mario Bros.)
Sea-Salt Ice Cream (Kingdom Hearts)
And that Butterbeer? Yeah, I’m SO making it again.
Update June '16: Time for a geeky bachelorette party! On the menu: Miruvor, Spice Beer, and Romulan Ale. Delicious, and fun! Goes well with ThinkGeek Laboratory Shot Glasses.

Geeky Goodness!
By Nico
I have been following the author's Geeky Chef website for a while and was ecstatic to see that she has created a cookbook for us "geeks". I found the book to be highly entertaining and lots of fun to look through and decide what to make. Lots of fabulous pictures to look at too for inspiration. Some reviewer's have said that they were "disappointed" that the book contained recipes from so many different games/books/movies/etc but I found this to be a plus in my opinion. It opened me up to investigating geekiness that I might not have been exposed to otherwise. Anyway, I'm hoping for a "Cookbook Two" sometime in the future to capture more geeky foods to recreate!
The recipes were easy to follow and the ones I've tried so far were delicious. The author definitely seems to have put some thought into recreating these foods as close to what might have been intended as possible while still making them accessible enough that anyone could enjoy them. Say Butterbeer three times and drink up!
I am very pleased with this purchase and appreciate the humorous recipe introductions. It's a fun book that puts a smile on my face when I pick it up.

Something in here for every geek!
By Bluerose's Heart
This cookbook is really cool, and a MUST for the major geeks out there!
I was both disappointed and excited about the huge variety. I know that sounds backwards concerning the disappointment. It does make the cookbook compatible to more people, though, assuring that some of your favorites are in here. The huge variety only gives you 1 recipe for most of the shows/movies/books/etc. Some of the more popular ones get more(3-5-ish)recipes, like Harry Potter, Star Trek, Legend of Zelda, and Lord of the Rings. Most only get 1 or 2, though. On the other hand, the huge variety ensured that some of my favorites were in here. There were plenty that I'd never even heard of, which were probably favorites to many others. I'm more of a book geek than anything else, so I enjoyed seeing so many book related recipes in here, like Redwall, Dragonriders of Pern, Dune, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy(which is at the top of my reading pile), among many others.
The recipes are divided into categories:
Beverages: Non-Alcoholic
Beverages: Alcoholic
Snacks and Appetizers
Soups and Stews
Entrees
Cakes and Cupcakes
Desserts
At the beginning of each section, you'll get a list of the recipes, along with which show/movie/book/etc it is inspired by. There's also an index in the back, so you can look up things that way, too. Most of the recipes get pictures of the recipe product, along with a bit of the show/movie/book/etc it came from, like a wand from Harry Potter.
Overall, despite a bit of disappointment that there wasn't more recipes from my favorites, it ensures that there's likely something in here for every geek, no matter what your favorite is, and I really do love it. I consider it a must for anyone that considers themselves a geek at all.
